Here's the scene shortly after we started- the foggers are still warming up:

Now the foggers are doing their work:

And a quick clip of my "victims":

A year of planning, building, re-building. Advances and reversals. Changes of plan on the fly. It all comes down to one magical night...

The weather refused to cooperate- heavy rains all day gradually tapered off to drizzle and- around 5 pm- some clear skies. Unfortunately, by 6 pm we were back to heavy rains. They ended quickly and the rest of the night was dry, but a lot of folks either stayed in or went elsewhere.

Still, the ones who did come out were impressed. Our crypt was a HUGE hit, and was certainly the "must-see" of the evening. Drac managed to scare a few of the teens and tweens by materializing out of the fog, providing a gentle reminder as who the Master of the Manor truly was...mwah hah hah!

Here are some pics and vids of the evening...hope you enjoy them as much as we did making them!
First, shopping at Michaels craft store for their Halloween clearance. Yeah. Clearance. Not even Halloween yet, and they're already selling it all off and putting up Christmas...

The upside is we can get great discounts on decorations and still have time to incorporate them into our display!

Today we picked up a bunch of Spookytown buildings and accessories to add into our display. Check out the video below!

This afternoon was supposed to see the crypt interior walls go up, with the crypt being completed tomorrow. Instead, one wall ended up in four pieces, and my shoulder ended up completely non-functional. I'll need a full day just to rebuild the wall, before I can even think about doing the crypt...majorly disappointing!

Oh well- check out Spookytown:
Put up the partial wall on the crypt, the rear barrier to keep folks out of the garage, and glued the 3rd crypt wall together. Added some finishing touches to the crypt facing and the roof, plus little bits here and there.

The pics below show the crypt during the day and at night. You can see the addition of two gargoyles on the roof, door knockers on the front walls, and a bat hanging inside the crypt.

The gargoyles and false wall show up better in this shot. We added the wall on the front corner, as the existing structure wasn't convincing- this at least looks like it's a corner:

Close-up of the false wall. It adds some depth and carries off the broken-wall look we're after:
Tomorrow we'll finish decorating the yard- adding the rest of the lights, hanging the ghouls, and other little touches- then start working on the crypt interior.

Already, we've seen an increase in foot and vehicle traffic as people come by to check out the place. It's really the best feeling when the work is up and you can sit back and watch people enjoy the efforts...

Here we are, October 1st- time to start setting up. Got the tombstones and fencing put up, along with the floodlights. We'll add more tomorrow and Friday, and try to finish it by Saturday.

Still have the crypt interior to finish, but that can't be done until the crypt exterior is out of the garage- plus, it won't be viewed for some time yet.

Here's some pics of the first day's setup:
Once again, Math bested me in single combat and I ended up 2 feet short on my burial niches, but I can fix that later. I need to add some boards to give the foam more support, and I need to add a roof and some trim around the garage door opening, but that's it. Come October 1st, when we put it up, we'll do some additional detailing and weathering, add some moss, and then put the skeletons and candles everywhere.

This was a challenging build, and it seemed like nothing was going to go right, it would never be finished, etc. But now that it's "done", the hard work really seems to have paid off. I'm pleased with how it turned out, and can't wait to get the lights sorted out and test it.
A trip to the hardware store, an afternoon of measuring and cutting and drilling, and now the entrance is assembled.

Remaining tasks:

Paint the exterior boards

Trim and tape the SceneSetters on the inside

Make a bottom section for the front facade

Make a wall section for the front facade

Cover the roof supports with weed block

Total work time: about 2 days. Then we're done with the exterior build and can start on the interior. I'm hoping to have it complete by mid-September and then I can concentrate on the remaining odds and ends for the haunt.
The blue color wash held up, the yellow came off a bit, and the brown came off about half the stones. So, after consultation with SpiderWitch, I went back over them with a blue and a gray wash. I also went over the panel lines to bring them out from the background.

Once that was done, it was time to glue/staple the SceneSetter backing on the inside of the walls. This was tedious, and it didn't help that a breeze blew in. But, all the walls have their insides prepped, so the project is one BIG step closer to being finished.

The next step will be to assemble the structure using L-brackets and fastening plates, to hold it steady while I make a roof out of the weed-barrier fabric. When that is complete, I'll finish detailing the outside walls- paint the trim boards, finish the bottom of the walls, add the moss and maybe some stains.

In September, I'll work on the bricks which will be laying about the grounds, as well as the crypt itself. Slow but steady...

Here are some pics of the repainted walls:
First, got the black and white laid in with the sponge- turned the bare grays into a more granite-like look:
While I was working on this, the neighbor girl (9) came by to check things out. She was soon sponging away at the panels, which was a big help.

Once that was finished, we were supposed to weather the panels with some washes and color variations. However, it was easier (and more educational) to simply wash the entire surface of the stone with a thinned down color, which we were able to do in very short order:
Okay, maybe the colors aren't representative of "real" stone, and maybe they're too bright, or not tied together...but the really important thing is that today a love of Halloween- including the building of props and development of a theme- was passed along to a young girl...who will continue to be a part of our haunt until she grows and moves away and develops her own haunt- and one day, she can pass it along to the next generation. I'd rather teach one child about the fun of building and decorating than create the greatest prop ever...after all, we do it for the kids!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17144036941770848367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4797653491482102633.post-72937963546777669552014-08-06T17:21:00.002-07:002014-08-06T17:21:50.998-07:00Not Quite Fifty Shades of Gray...Well, Two ActuallyGot the primary colors laid in on the walls- two shades of gray, which gives them a subtle but distinct difference between them. The next step will be to use a sponge and add black and white paint to give it a stone look. The first pic has a higher contrast to bring out the difference in the colors, the second photo is more of a normal view.

After that was done, I applied Monster Mud to all the panels- right now they're beige, but we'll be painted and dry brushing and stippling and washing them to create more of a stone effect.

Once the outer wall textures are finished, the next step will be to complete the interior- either paint or Scene Setters stone wall pattern. Once that's done, we'll assemble the structure and build a roof, complete the details for the exterior, and begin work on the doors, broken wall, and rear wall; this looks into the garage, so it's the last part to complete before we tackle the interior project.

Lots to do still, but the hardest parts are behind us now.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17144036941770848367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4797653491482102633.post-16227944887082877252014-07-26T16:34:00.001-07:002014-07-26T16:34:45.307-07:00The Crypt Comes To LifeGot the walls to the crypt entrance built and did a quick test-fit. Next step will be to permanently fasten them, cover the insides (canvas and scene setters), then start texturing the outside. Final steps will involve building a roof and adding architectural details like moldings, trim, etc.
They didn't have 4x8' board, but they offered a discount on 2x4' boards, so I bought (what I thought was) enough for both projects...

I had the schematic with me, and it spelled out how many boards I needed for the two projects. Since I was getting 2x4 instead of 4x8, and since 2x2=4 and 4x2=8, I reasoned that I needed twice as many of the smaller boards as I had listed in the larger sizes. Having completed my purchases, I returned home and commenced laying out my wall.

Aaaaannnddd....it all went "pear-shaped." If you saw this coming- congrats! Turns out, through some bizarre property of math, that you need four 2x4' boards to equal one 4x8' board. In one fell swoop, I went from more than enough for both projects to a bit more than enough for one project.

Meanwhile, the adhesive wasn't bonding to the foam properly, which meant my boards didn't stick to the wooden frames. The wood glue didn't adhere to the wood, so the frames fell apart. And it was hot and sunny, so I got cooked and burned.

For a day's worth of work, all I have to show are two boards glued to two pieces of wood, various other pieces of wood cut to length, and sunburn.

This is why I started in June...Shadowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16028908465067181957noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4797653491482102633.post-80858472849134901922014-04-30T18:59:00.001-07:002014-04-30T18:59:23.054-07:00Happy Walpurgisnacht! That's right, it's Walpurgisnacht- that Central/Northern European festival where witches are said to dance around bonfires in celebration of Spring. Finalized our builds for this year's haunt, now we can start acquiring the materials and building a little at a time. The project list looks like:

Hard-wiring all the LEDs for the candles

Building a free-standing mausoleum

Building a free-standing entrance to our crypt

Building a crypt inside the garage

Creating a burial vault for the other garage door

Creating a free-standing tomb in the garage

Creating dried-out corpses

The basic plans for the structures are below:

Once the structures are built, they'll be extensively weathered and detailed. The crypt entrance will (ideally) have two wooden doors (foam really) or two wrought-iron (PVC) gates, and a broken section of wall on the side. The trick-or-treaters will enter the front gate, pass through the gap in the wall, and make their way to the front porch. They'll be able to look inside the garage to see the crypt scene, which will be lit with a blue spotlight above (a "moonlight" effect) and candelabras/candles for accent lighting. Inside the crypt entrance is still up in the air. I haven't decided what, if anything, to put in there. I'm debating either a "stained glass" window effect or just a painting on the unbroken wall, with more accent lighting.

The mausoleum for the New Orleans side will have Spanish Moss draped everywhere and maybe some flat tombstones on the driveway to give it a crowded look common in cemetaries in that area. Maybe we'll do a firefly lighting effect, and we'll probably have a static blacklit ghost in the mausoleum itself. Potentially may try a Pepper's Ghost effect in the crypt, we'll see how much time we end up with. Shadowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16028908465067181957noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4797653491482102633.post-74914044028447309472014-01-11T22:03:00.002-08:002014-01-11T22:03:33.296-08:00Happy HallownewyearWelcome to 2014!
SpiderWitch, Drac Jr, and your gracious host had a most enjoyable holiday. And now that the Christmas ornaments are put away and everything is back to normal (more or less), it's time to start thinking about Halloween.

If we learned anything from last year, it's that we need more time to accommodate the last-minute projects and the stuff which doesn't work the way we envisioned. So we'll be starting in July. Which means we need to determine the project list, well, now if we're going to be ready to start.

SpiderWitch wants to do a New Orleans-themed vignette on the side of the house opposite the front door. Spanish moss, urns with flowers and candles in front of above-ground crypts, maybe some lightning bugs darting lazily among the trees. If we could open the crypt, perhaps a ghoul inside with a fluorescent light.

In front of the garage, we plan to put up a canopy and build some walls to represent a crypt entrance- wrought iron doors on rusty hinges will open up to a dark enclosed space; the garage door will be up, but blocked off by another wrought iron gate opening up on a crypt with skeletons resting on niches in the walls, and a central sarcophagus. Maybe a Pepper's Ghost type illusion in here.

Exiting through a hole in the "wall", the guests will make their way to the porch, where the front door will have been replaced by Drac's coffin lid. Maybe- this might be too scary, and honestly I'm still on the fence about it.

We're trying to figure out where to put "the girls"- our Weeping Angels. We plan to put at least one of them on a turntable and have her move in response to guests.

We're going to try to use social media to do a "dress rehearsal" where the kids can come out in costume and take pictures ahead of the big day.

Stay tuned, we'll be updating the blog with more projects...Shadowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16028908465067181957noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4797653491482102633.post-22338141289501428482013-11-01T14:55:00.002-07:002013-11-01T15:01:27.698-07:00November 1st, 2013Halloween 2013 is over. Months of prep, research, building, painting, testing- all down to one night. Blood, sweat, fortunately no tears. But a fair amount of blood. All for about 3 hours of trick or treating. Is it worth it?

Absolutely.

So many kids said "thank you for doing this for us." They thanked us for the time we spent making it, thanked us for putting in the effort, thanked us for making it special. "Thanks for giving us something to talk about tomorrow," one pair of teens offered.

Most of the kids made a point of telling us how much they liked the decorations. Parents too, but it's the kids we're doing this for. Today's trick or treater will be tomorrow's haunter, and we're giving them some great memories to draw upon. Thirty years from now, the kid who told me how great my house looked will be listening to another kid tell HIM how great his house looks.

Even better, there were many more houses with foggers, music, lights, and so forth. The trend in our neighborhood is for more decorations, and I have hopes that the next few years will see a golden age of haunted houses.

There were still the jerky kids who show up with little/no costume and barely mumbled trick or treat- but they were the minority and most of them came around. I can be...persuasive.

The fog machines put out too much fog- at one point we had zero visibility, and for much of the night the fog was actually covering about half the block- I turned it off as it was a traffic hazard.

It was a lot of work, and at the end of the evening I was completely beat- but riding a wave of euphoria from the great response.

The angels proved to be a big hit, and surprisingly scary. Quite a few kids (and adults) didn't want to come up to the house because of them. I made several trips down to the sidewalk to deliver candy to little ones too frightened to come up.

Can't wait for next year!
About 6pm, foggers haven't really chilled the vapor yet- that's why it's billowing up instead of across the grass. Still, makes a nice, eerie effect and if you're already expecting something to jump at you, the fog intensifies that fear- so many kids completely freaked themselves out without me doing a thing!
From the front porch looking out. The music is "Translyvania" from Nox Arcana. GREAT music, well worth what I paid for it.
This is a pretty representative video of the evening. There are the kids who only want the candy, the kids who like the decorations, and the kids who are REALLY impressed.

Been planning to do a test with the fog machines to see how much coverage we get, how dense it is, and so forth. Went out tonight to turn off the LED tea lights and votives, and saw that Nature had jumped the gun with a fog display of her own:
The fog is much thicker than it appears through the lens- visibility is about 50 feet, with details washing out around 20 feet or so. Looking out the front door, there's a heavy mist along the walkway which bounces the light from the floods around and scatters it, creating some eerie shadow effects as you walk.

Despite the broken leg, I got up on the ladder and hung the background lights up- I think that gives enough ambient lighting for the porch, and the amber color complements the glow from the LEDs.
Some pics with the camera, a bit less blurry now that the shutter doesn't have to stay open so long:

The view looking up from the street. The blue spot hits the tombstones, the front walk, and the Weeping Angels by the garage, casting deep shadows.

I think the blue is an improvement on the red light from last year- the shadows are cooler, giving it more of a moon-glow feeling.

Closeup of the tombstone area. This is always a hit with the families- they have their kids pose in the graveyard and take photos. Very satisfying to see how much they enjoy the atmosphere.

The Weeping Angels- not as good as the BBC version, but they still look creepy at night. They need a better home- we'll work on that next Halloween.

The front porch. It's not really this bright, but the exposure makes it look that way. There's enough light to safely get up and down if you're wearing a costume, but not much more. The LEDs work well with the candles, blending in with the yellows and oranges.

The skull table. Not much to say here- it's a good way to display the candles since we don't have any more fixtures to place them on.

You can sort of see the detail of the "wax" dripping down the sides- hot glue makes a suitable substitute. The paint was antique white, which gave a nice ivory color to the PVC and glue.

The left side of the porch, showing the wrought iron stands and the table. It also shows off the Scene Setter background SpiderWitch found- very nice!

Right side of the porch, candelabra and taper candles with C7 flicker bulbs. Next year we're going to make all the candelabras and candles hardwired to a plug- running up and downstairs to turn everything on/off is tedious. Painful with a broken ankle.
In two places. In July.

I thought I had sprained it- ran for the bus and landed wrong on my right foot- and it was just taking a long time to heal, but I finally went to the doc and they showed it broken in two places. So now I'm wearing the "boot of shame" for the next three weeks.

Meanwhile, no climbing on ladders and no prolonged standing- so no work on projects. Good news is we're mostly done. I should be able to fix the rest of it up this coming week.Shadowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16028908465067181957noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4797653491482102633.post-24581780950294027082013-10-06T20:30:00.000-07:002013-10-07T20:49:56.440-07:00Mission Complete! (more or less)After a four-day marathon of activity, 3 hours after work Thursday and Friday and 9 hours Saturday and Sunday, we're "done"...

The to-do list consists of building the fog chillers, wiring the Angels to their final resting places, and taping the last scene setter to the garage door(s). I've got one more project which SpiderWitch added today (!!), but that won't take more than an hour. So for all intents and purposes, we're finished with our build.
Here's the front entrance:
Still, I was able to work on the porch, cutting some more candles out of the PVC. I've got one 5 foot section to go, but with 15 feet cut I've got just under 30 candles between 6 and 8 inches high (for some reason, I ended up with 3 7-inch candles).

I tried to use the hot glue gun SpiderWitch bought me, but it didn't work- never got hot enough to create the drips I need to look like melted wax. So, that's on hold until we get a better gun. Meanwhile, though, I'll glue some of the candles together to create groups.

I've also been browsing a bunch of web tutorials on hard-wiring the tea lights. This would be a LOT easier than manually turning them on and off every night, not to mention cheaper as we wouldn't have to replace batteries. It seems fairly straightforward, but I've got more research to do.

Here's a quick pic of just the candles:
The forecast for Saturday looked good, so I planned out my projects intending to accomplish them in one marathon session.

Nope.

Huge storm moving through the region- heavy rains all day today, accompanied by strong wind gusts. Forecast for Sunday doesn't look any better. So much for getting everything done.
There were a couple of projects we had on the back burner, so I moved them up to the front. First thing was to soak a bunch of fabric in Rit Fabric Whitener, to give them a nice fluorescent capability. They'll be turned into some ghosts rising from behind the tombstones on the other side of the yard. We'll hit them with a blacklight for a nice glowing effect. The idea is to do something similar to the ghoulish figures in Fantasia:

The best part is when they first come up from the grave...

Next up was a continuation of the lighting for the front porch. The candelabras look great, but don't give us enough light for the trick or treaters. We either have to use an overhead light source, or add more candles.

More candles it is.

Through the use of LED tea candles, PVC pipe, and hot glue, we can create a large number of pillar candles quickly and cheaply. I was able to knock out about a dozen this afternoon in under 2 hours. We still need to add the hot glue and then paint them, but we can do that anytime, anyplace. Ideally, this will give us the necessary light level.

Next week we start setting everything up. I was hoping to have it all done, and not still building it during October, but as SpiderWitch pointed out, people like walking by and watching us set up the various parts of the haunt. So I guess if we still have to build a few things, it's not so bad. The hardest parts are finished at least.
First up was the Scene Setter- got that taped to the weed fabric, so the next step will be to hang it and mark the grommets, finish taping the seams, and then cut it to fit the wall. The hard part is done though.

After that was finished, I weathered the tombstones with a bit more black paint, then drybrushed with a sponge to get a lighter gray highlight. Added some orange-gray spots of lichen, then glued moss to make it look like it's been in the ground for years and years. Turned out pretty snazzy I think:
Final project was the sign for our cemetery. It was originally green with gray writing, but I figured a metallic look would be better.
